CAREER HISTORY

John J. Middleton studied Mathematics at the University of Witwatersrand and thereafter studied accountancy, finance and economics at Foulks-Lynch College in London. He was admitted as an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1975, and was named a Fellow of the Institute in 1981. He is also a member of the British Association of Accountants and Auditors and of the Society of Company Accountants.

After some years working in a provincial accounting practice in Coventry, he joined Price Waterhouse in Birmingham in 1974. In 1976 he joined Grant Thornton as a tax consultant.

In 1977 John took a post with Marsh & McLennan in Bermuda as a manager and underwriter for captive insurance companies. He was promoted to Asst. Vice President the following year. In 1979 John was promoted to VP and transferred to Nashville, Tennessee to open the first Marsh & McLennan office in that state. In 1982 he was asked by the Hospital Underwriting Group, Inc., a large specialized insurer, to become its president and CEO. In 1986 he left Tennessee and relocated to Vermont where he specialized in advising, managing and reinsuring trusts, captive insurance companies, self-insurance pools and related entities.

John's sphere of expertise includes extensive, hands-on experience in underwriting; reinsurance design and placement; insurance and reinsurance finance, insurance and reinsurance law and procedures; investment and cash flow disciplines; actuarial studies, reviews and critiques; commutations, run-offs, portfolio transfers and novations; reorganizations, redomestications and related procedures as well as in-depth accounting reviews and audits.

In 1988 he formed Northern States Management and Northern States Intermediaries, Inc. in Stowe, Vermont. Both companies are engaged in providing management expertise and placing reinsurance for special purpose alternative market insurance companies. During 2000 the group relocated to Burlington, Vermont. The Northern States group is privately owned and completely independent.

Northern States Intermediaries, Inc. is a licensed reinsurance intermediary. Reinsurance has been placed for captives, pools and risk retention groups in every popular alternative market domicile.
